Fatty Lumps - Herbal Remedies?

Postby zakyle » Mon Mar 22nd, 2010 7:17 am

Hi,

My last weimeraner developed a fatty lump on her back, which was removed by the vet.
I think that Belle is developig the same type of fatty lump, and i think they are fairly common in Weimeraners (Or perhaps just more noticable due to thier smoothcoat) Are there any herbal remedies that could help to disperse this lump or to at least pevent it growing any bigger?

thanks all

Not that I know of at this point in time. Every time I've asked this question I've had evasive answers. I "think" a good Homeopath should be able to help, not sure though. What I do is boost the immune system as best I can. Thanks for the reminder to make up more Essiac.

Yes, they're common in Weimaraners, all mine have had them but I leave them alone. My vet showed me how to tell if they're harmless when he got fed up with me running in with yet another - as long as you can get your fingers in behind it and wobble it around, don't worry was what he said. My first dog lived to 15 and was covered in them.

My current dog is 8 and has several already.

The main concern is when they are very large or somewhere that inhibits the dog's movement, somewhere like behind the elbow or on the ribcage, for example. It is possible for them to grow into the ribcage becoming less mobile, so may need removing as they can inhibit the intercostal muscles from moving well when the dog breaths. I'm thinking about a very large one there, not the typical ones that are only about the size of ten p. piece. Tatlim had one on her ribcage about the size of my cupped hand. It was difficult for them to remove, but her activity definitely improved after it gone. She could breath better and it didn't (presumably) hurt so much to stretch or run.

Sorry not really answering the question of remedies.

Holly 14, has quite a few fatty lumps. Some are quite large and don't really bother her. Just part of getting old

Thanks All - i posted a resonse earlier, but its dissapeared!! :suss:

Belle has only just turned 3 - but then my pevious Weim Amber had one at around 3-4. The strange thing is that they are almost in the same place. I will monitor it and go to the vet if i am worried. Murial, what is the best thing to use to try and boost her immune system?

Blue had a big one on his back when he arrived at 18 months old, he has had some removed, including that one and some we've left alone. Non of them have restricted his movement or caused discomfort. We only have them removed if they start to change in size and grow very quickly. The advice we received was that when they grow quickly there is more chance of them either turning nasty or bursting so it is better to get rid of them in a controlled way. The rest we check have the mobility Muriel describes and just keep an eye on them. I think some dogs are more prone than others, Blue has loads, Inca has non.

Boosting Immune System - start with food and water - real food - meat, fish, fruit, veg - preferably raw but whatever siuts her digestive system, sometimes when we start them on real later, they can't cope with raw and need their meat browned a little and of course in an ideal world we'd all feed our dogs as well as ourselves organic, but whatever you can manage, I only manage some organic for both of us. Water - pure spring water of course is best, there are so many chemicals added to tap water these days.

Avoid chemicals of all sorts, but of course there's a limit to what we can avoid. Vaccinations are supposed to be the main cause of fatty and other lumps. I have a feeling you're in USA though and if so unless you can find a vet to say no, you may not have a choice, but at least minimise them. Avoid chemical wormers, flea treatments etc, all can be done naturally, garlic is great.

Supplements to consider if food isn't good enough - vit C, B, D, other vits etc kelp, chlorella, Royal jelly, much the same as we would take, depends what's missing really. Fish oil, Evening Primrose oil.....Flax oil is good, the list goes on....

Herbally - Essiac as I mentioned, things like Red Clover, Yarrow, Nettle, lots of herbs available, see what you feel would help.

Thanks Muriel,

A lot of research for me I think
I am in the UK, Eccleshall in Staffordshire - so pretty much central.
We often travel to scotland staying in cottages as my Dad still lives in Scotland.

thanks again :)
